In Vindonissa, 6,000 legionaries once prepared for their missions. Today, you playfully see, hear and feel the 2000-year footsteps of a long-ago life of legionaries and officers.
Ten remarkable sites are your invitation to travel back in time: to the sunken officer’s kitchen with pictures of a lavish festive meal and conversations to listen to, for example, the ruins of the Roman thermal bath that comes to life with light and scents, or the only still functional Roman water main north of the Alps. Many of the locations cannot be seen from the outside and are exclusively accessible for the guests of the Legionary’s Trail in the glow of modern presentation.
For families and adults there are some exiting games and tours and events available. Every Sunday a host of activities will be staged in the Roman workshop Fabrica. Visitors may choose to bake bread and learn about Roman craftsmanship.
Become a Roman for the night
Those hungry for new adventures can now experience a night in the authentically reconstructed contubernia that were once home to Roman legionnaires. Under the watchful eye of an experienced legionnaire, families and groups learn all the knowledge and skills required of a Roman soldier. Having worked up an appetite on a brisk march, they learn to cook an authentic legionnaire’s meal over the fire. Then it’s on to fighting and games, before drawing the evening to a close around the campfire with stories of day-to-day life as a legionnaire. Each of the contubernia is decked out with straw mattresses to create a unique Roman overnight experience. Once the fire has gone out and all are settled quietly in their beds, it’s time to sleep as the Romans did in Vindonissa! The new day starts with a Roman breakfast prepared by the guests themselves and ends with a unique memento of the time spent as legionnaires together.
